All three major averages posted gains for the third consecutive week, lifted by solid quarterly earnings and positive economic data. Earnings season ramps up next week, with five of the Super Six mega-cap stocks delivering results. Employment numbers are the most important economic data, with Friday's January nonfarm payrolls report carrying the most weight. The January ISM Manufacturing report on Thursday and December's factory orders report Friday are expected to show the sector still in contraction mode. But earnings and commentary this week from peer Sartorious made us encouraged about a return to growth in 2024.

Small cap stocks are undergoing a resurgence, and Goldman Sachs Asset Management is looking to capitalize on it through the exchange-traded fund space. One, believe it or not, is small cap core," Brendan McCarthy, the firm's managing director of exchange traded funds, told CNBC's "ETF Edge" on Monday. "This is our first active small cap ETF, and that's very much on the back of investor demand." It's called the Goldman Sachs Small Cap Core Equity ETF and it's up almost 8% since its early October launch date. Meanwhile, the Russell 2000, which tracks small cap stocks, is up more than 7% in that same time frame as of Tuesday's market close.

Its desert climate inspires builders whose designs prioritize conserving both water and energy. KB Home 's valuation is too high given its expected future performance, JPMorgan warned. Rehaut cut his price target by $3.50 to $32.50, which implies the stock will fall 9.1% from Friday's close. Rehaut noted it's also expensive given that KB Home is expected to trail those smaller-cap competitors on gross margins, operating margins and return on equity. "We view its valuation ... as expensive relative to our outlook for below average gross margins, operating margins and ROE," he said in a Monday note to clients. Rehaut noted the stock could perform better than expected if it sees stronger-than-expected pricing or easing inflation, which could both help gross margins.

Horton, Lennar and other homebuilders as the housing market is due for a comeback, according to KeyBanc Capital Markets. Analyst Kenneth Zener double upgraded the homebuilding sector to overweight from underweight, saying history points to higher prices after declines this year, which came amid slowing demand and rising mortgage rates. The analyst pointed to data going back to 1963 showing that the relationship between homebuilders and the S & P 500 now offers relative risk to reward. Over the past 19 economic cycles, "Builders fell 41% (28% vs. the S & P) with those same cycles' recoveries offering 194% upside (up 141% vs. the S & P)," Zener wrote in a Friday note. "On balance, we see fundamental and rate pressure persisting, but positive relative performance, supporting our upgrades," Zener wrote.
